05.18.08:
Wow! Already the D7 year has come to a
close. We went to
Clovis in March. The
weather held well and the
rodeo hosted by D6 was very
well done. D7 had a strong
showing in the cutting once
again. I won the first
round and won the overall.
The buckles they gave are
really nice. Jacob Pineiro
and Kade Sayler, also from
D7 tied for 2nd and Jeremy
placed high as well.
Overall, the D7 team did an
outstanding job.
Next we traveled to the
Challenge of Champions.
I celebrated my 17th B-Day
while I was there. That
basically meant a great cake
fight with Annie Spurr
leading the way. The food
was great, as usual, thanks
to the Spurr and Rupe
families great cooking. I
am really looking forward to
the food at state.
In April we traveled to
Salinas for another
multi district hosted by
D4. It was windy and cold.
My cutting went pretty well
and D7 was strong again. D7
took the first 4 places in
the cutting. Taylor did a
great job turning my steer
the first day, and I got a
chance to head one for her
the second day.
Also in April, Mom and I
traveled to the state board
meeting in Fresno. A
lot of people didn't make it
there, so it was tough to
get anything done. It looks
like everything is ready to
go for state, however, and
we are well prepared. I
can't wait. We have lots of
fun stuff planned, hopefully
we will be able to pull off
the mud volleyball
tournament this year.
California really needs the
practice, we got killed at
Silver State last year.
Today was our banquet to
celebrate the end of the
year and to give out
awards. I can't believe the
year is already over. I won
the bull riding championship
for the year. I qualified
for the state finals in the
bulls and the cutting. I
placed in the top ten in all
of my events (bulls,
cutting, team roping and
calf roping). I hope to do
even better next year.
Congratulations to all of
our D7 winners, we are a
great team.
A special thank you needs
to go out to Frank Simonis
Quarter Horses. He
realized that with gas
prices what they are that I
would need a little help to
get where I want to go this
summer. He has already
renewed his sponsorship for
another year. Thank You,
Thank you Thank you!!
So now it is practice
until State in the middle of
June. I plan on hitting
a few junior rodeos to help
prepare, but will need to
stay closer to home until
prices come down a little.
Talk to you soon.
02.19.08: Well, the new year
is off and running. We went
last weekend to a great multi
district rodeo, hosted by
District 4. We competed with
D4, D7 and D6. A few showed up
from other districts as well.
I has the chance to ride a
bull that I saw in the PBR
in Fresno just a few weeks
before. Ross Coleman had him in
Fresno. It was really cool that
Flying High Rodeo brought him
for the high school guys to
try. None of us rode him, but
it was sure fun and I would like
to try him again.
Next we are off to another
multi district rodeo in
Clovis. Hopefully the weather
will be nice with no rain. Then
it is off to Challenge of
Champions in Plymouth. I'll let
you know how it goes
01.14.08: Happy New Year!!!
I know I've been kinda quiet,
but rodeo took a little break to get
through the holidays. District 7
held their great Mid State Classic
in November. It is the biggest high
school rodeo in the state. It went
very well. District 6 took home the
team trophy, but D7 will be tough at
state. Watch out!.
The state board meeting was
held in January in Jackson. The
weather to get there was bad, so
some couldn't make it. While we
were there the students got to look
at various vendors and choose awards
that we would like to see at our
state finals. If you have someone
in your area that has cool stuff----
make sure we know about them. We
also talked about proposed rule
changes for next year. If you know
a way to make high school rodeo
better, talk to your district rep
about it.
Last weekend, D7 held its
first rodeo for 2008. It was held
at the Madonna Inn. I placed 3rd in
the round in cutting and team roping
and was 2nd in the bull riding.
Still need to work on my calf roping
some more.
Last but certainly not least, I
really need to say thanks to my
sponsors and the people who just
support me in general in what I do.
Thanks to my family-- especially the
grandparents that sit through every
run, and the friends that are
helping me get things done. I
wouldn't be able to do it without
you. I wouldn't even get to the
rodeos with out the help from my
great sponsors. You have no idea
how important you are.
10.15.07: We had the finals
for the SJCA rodeo season. It looked
like rain on Friday, and rained during
the night but luckily the day was
great. We held a one day rodeo on
Saturday and then had breakfast and an
awards ceremony on Sunday.
Saturday I won 2nd in the team
roping with Steven Bertao, 5th in the
breakaway roping and tied for 1st place
in the bull riding with Casey Rose.
For the year end awards I won
first place and the buckle in the team
roping, 3rd in the bulls and placed in
the other events as well. The awards
were very well done and I really like
all the stuff I got.
Thanks for a great season to all the
people in Springville that put these
rodeos on, I can't wait for next year.
09.24.07: We just had the first district
7 rodeo of the year. It went really
well. All the contestants were ready and
everyone really pitched in to help get it
done. It was really good to see all the new
faces and to see the ones that were coming
back for another year.
As for me, I had a decent day. I
rode my bulls to a first place finish. I
roped for the first time with my D7 partner,
Taylor George. We placed 2nd in the first
round and finished 4th in the average.
Cutting was okay, and I need to work on my
calf roping some more. All in all not bad!
Next weekend it is back to Springville
for the SJCA.
08.28.07: Well it has been awhile since I
have updated the news.
I have been to
SJCA in Springville 2X. Both went great and
I did really well in the team roping and bull
riding. Breanna and I have done really well
roping together. I placed second in the bull
riding at the last one.
District 7 has held their sign up meetings.
Members and new members that want to enter our
first rodeo need to have their papers in to
Janelle Bilkey by Sept. 1. If you didn't make
the meeting, you can download the forms off of
our state web site,
www.chsra.com.
If you need help, just let me know and I will
see what I can do. Our first rodeo is scheduled
for Sept. 22 in Creston, CA.
The state board had their first meeting in
Fresno. There was a lot of talk and
interesting things that came up. The state
voted to keep the bachelor team roping for the
year, so if you need a partner you can still
enter. This is a great way to meet people and
to allow new people to join. If you want to see
all the minutes from the meeting you can see
them soon on the state web site. If you have
questions about things going on at the state
level, please feel free to ask me.
07.13.07: Well, Silver State is over. I am very happy
to report that I won to be the Silver State
International Boys cutting Champion. I won the
first go round with a score of 73, tied for 2nd in
the 2nd go and placed 4th in the finals for a total
of 213 points. 2nd through 4th was split with a
score of 208. The prizes awarded were great, I
came home with 2 Gist buckles, a bronze statue, a
money clip and most important of all a SADDLE.
California didn't send many contestants, but the
ones that were there were awesome. We won the
boys and girls cutting, the team roping, 2nd in
poles and steer wrestling and placed in the goats
and breakaway. We ended up 3rd in team points
behind states that sent full numbers of team
contestants. We didn't do so great in the mud
volleyball, Arizona beat us, but it was lots of fun.
I met other cowboys and cowgirls from around the
world. Contestants came from Canada (Alberta
and British Columbia), Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon,
Washington, Colorado Pennsylvania, Hawaii, and
Arizona just to name few. I know there were lots
of others there, I just can't think of them right
now.
I am so glad that I got to go to this amazing
rodeo. There were so many that helped me get
there. Thanks Uncle Brad, Russ and Morgan for
getting me ready. Thanks to the sponsors and
friends who helped pay the way. Thanks to the de
Regt family for taking care of us while we were
there.
We'll see them again next year
The CHSRA state finals is over. It was a great week
filled with tough competition.
The District 7 team was awesome. We won both in and out
of the arena. As a team we won the Grand Entry contest
led by our queen, Morgan Dewar. We also won the King contest
with Tyler Stevenson. Best of all our team won the
overall team competition by earning the most points
overall among all the other districts. WAY TO GO D7!!
I ended up 8th in the state in the boys cutting.
In less than a week I will be headed to Fallon, Nevada to
represent California at the Silver State International
Rodeo. I will be cutting and riding bulls. I cant wait!!
I just came back from 2 days of rodeo in
Springville. Once again it was a great rodeo and
a good time. I managed to be "in the money" in 3 of my 5
events entered. I placed in the team roping, calf roping and
bull riding. I also threw both of my chute dogging steers, but
did not place in the event. In the team roping I headed my first
steer ever, it was pretty exciting.
Next weekend is JCCA ... then it is off to
state!
05.15.07:
Well the
District Seven regular season is officially over. We had our
final rodeo last weekend.
I maintained my position in both my events. Now it is
time to get ready for State.
Thanks to all who have helped me all year, and good luck
to all the D7 team members as we head to Bishop |
05.10.07: I know it wasn't on my schedule,
but I started going to a new junior rodeo association last
weekend.
It is the Sierra Junior Rodeo and their first rodeo was held
in Springville, CA this last weekend. It was a lot of fun
and I am really looking forward to going back. I roped with
Brianna and together we won the team roping. I also
entered the calf roping for the first time. I am really looking
forward to adding that to my regular list of events.
Their next rodeo is June 4th-5th. |
04.23.07: Wow! It is hard to believe how fast
the year has gone.
Sunday we had our 2nd to last district rodeo of the year. It
started out pretty wet for the cutting. It was raining like
crazy. Everybody jumped in, helped, and was ready to go. I had
a pretty good day. I ended up 2nd in the bull riding, and placed
2nd in the 2nd round of the cutting. I roped with Roy Bilkey in
the team roping and I legged my steer in the 2nd round. One more
district rodeo and it is off to state finals,I can hardly wait!!
I want to thank our district parents and board for all the
help and willingness to donate their time to put on these
rodeos. A huge thank you to Jim Hartzell for being
president and organizing it all. We couldn't do this without all
of you. |
03.28.07: Well the Challenge of
Champions has come and gone. District 7 was great! We had
many team members make the finals. Sug O Wena and I made the
finals in the cutting and I ended up 8th overall. I am really
looking forward to going to state and seeing all these great
competitors again.

3/7/07 I am very sorry to report that Little Lenas
Choice died last night. He was doing fine and
then within a short time he went into repiratory
distress. Despite the efforts of the vet, we were
unable to save him. I will really miss this great
horse. Although I only had him a short time, he and
I were doing well together. Thank you so much Lena
and to the Heller family for allowing me to have
him.
3/2/07 Clovis was the spot for the Sensational 6 Chute
Out. I rode Little Lenas Choice in the cutting and
was able to move up a spot in the standings for my
district. It was a great rodeo and we had lots of fun.
02.20.07: Well the cast is off and
I am back to riding. Just a few days after
getting the cast removed I competed in King City. I
didn't do as well as I wanted to, but I did
qualify for the Challenge of Champions Invitational
in the Bull Riding. They invite the top three in
each event from the districts. It will be in
Plymouth, California. I am the alternate to go
in the cutting event.
I want to give a huge THANK YOU
to all the people who are helping and supporting me
along the way!! I could not do it without you!
01.18.07: I broke my hand
while riding a saddle bronc on December 17th and had
surgery on December 28th - requiring six-pins to repair
it.
Because of the cast I was unable to ride my
bulls at the Madonna Inn rodeo. I did compete in the
cutting horse contest and split first-place in the
first-round.
The hand is healing nicely and I expect to return
to all of my events soon. I am hoping to compete in all
at the King City rodeo. Hopefully, I will be practicing
my saddle bronc again soon. I would like to add it to my
events this year.
